Data Storage Green Initiatives Take a Knock

Data centres and the data storage industry have received a lot of attention recently. There is increasing concern over the amount of energy that data centres consume, as well as concern over the ability of storage devices to develop quickly enough to keep up with user demands. In a 2007 study by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on electricity usage by data centres, it was shown that the cost of data storage is steadily rising, while the budgets for networking equipment and servers remained relatively steady. According to Steve Denegri, a storage consultant and financial analyst, this trend is bad news for data centres.

Denegri contends that the direction in which many data centres are heading – towards increased energy efficiency – is not the correct one, and will ultimately lead to a deepening of the storage crisis. He says that in order for the storage industry to grow, and to keep up with the demands placed in it by consumers, it needs “an ample supply of energy”. The fact that the industry is trying to work around energy limitations with green initiatives rather than addressing the problem directly places undue stress on the industry and consistently ignores real consumer needs.

Denegri says that the storage industry is trying to enable consumers to use more resources at lower levels of power consumption because that it what they believe consumers want. But Denegri contends that what consumers really want is lower utility costs. By pandering to the green trend and projecting an environmentally conscious image, the storage industry is in fact placing consumers between that much talked about rock and hard place. As companies continue to make small adjustments and adaptations to their energy efficient devices, consumers have to continually upgrade or replace their systems. So while storage companies are assured of a continuing market, consumers are paying through the nose for better “low cost” performance.

Instead of going green, the storage industry should tackle the energy problem head on, which according to Denegri, entails building “multiple thousand-megawatt” power plants, as suggested by the Uptime Institute. Companies need to expand and contribute to the capacity of power grids, rather than being a drain on them.

While Denegri allows that energy efficiency is an important concern, he’s somewhat scornful of companies that “buy into that nonsense”. As far as he is concerned, the storage/energy problem should be viewed from a strictly business position and that purely business orientated solutions should be applied. If it doesn’t increase revenue and pander to the whims of consumerist public, then it’s not worth considering.

Even though his solutions make great business sense, Denegri has failed to take into account the fact that it is precisely this kind of thinking that led to this problem in the first place. All industries need to start taking cognisance and responsibility for their impact on the environment, and rather than behaving like spoilt children denied their favourite treat, they should find ways to earn their treats. Consumers will also have to learn to live more simply and economically because this is not purely a business problem, but an overarching environmental one. Companies who subscribe to this way of thinking are not “buy in to any nonsense”, but are demonstrating appreciable common sense. Their efforts shouldn’t be mocked, but applauded.

Getting a Bad Deal With Knock Off UGGs

While there are some people who would buy nothing more than the authentic, there are also some people who buy knock off uggs. There may be several reasons for this. Some may think they can look fashionable by passing off fakes as real ones. Others hope they can get the exact same benefits that they can have with real UGGs. There are also a number of people who only buy fakes so they can wear them for ordinary days so they can preserve their real UGGs. Many people may not know though that knock offs are a real waste of your money.

Before buying fakes, it must be completely clear that manufacturing such products is illegal. Only registered brand names are legally allowed to make UGGs. Buying fake ones is just like buying pirated movies and fake designer clothes and bags. In a way, buying knock offs is a way of supporting illegal activities.

Consumers should remember though that there are many different brands of UGGs. There seems to be a lot of confusion on this aspect. Some people seem to think that there is only one brand name for UGGs and all other UGG looking footwear that bear different names are knock offs.

The term “UGG” actually originated as a generic Australian term for sheepskin footwear. Although UGG Australia has had the term trademarked, other manufacturers continue to legitimately manufacture their own line of UGG shoes and boots. You can therefore buy real UGGs with a different brand name as UGG Australia.

However, UGG Australia as well as the several other UGG brands are being imitated by other manufacturers using sub-standard materials for the products. If you want to buy real UGGs and not knock off UGGs, then you should take the necessary steps to find out if you are not being ripped off.

Many real UGGs come with twin-faced sheepskin. This provides maximum softness, comfort and durability. The material also provides balanced and nearly perfect tanning. Some authentic styles may also use single-faced sheepskin but only when it is paired with equally durable and quality suede or leather. Whatever the style, shape and color, real UGGs give you the best and most comfortable feeling and protection in any season.

There are some knock offs that don’t use sheepskin or only use sub-quality sheepskin. These cheap materials wear off easily leaving the shoes uncomfortable to wear. As many knock off users would know, fakes can make your feet feel uncomfortable and sweaty. Those that don’t have flexible soles may even hurt your feet. They also end up getting ripped to pieces faster. Stitches and soles may come apart through constant use.

If you want to have the comfort, enduring style and durability of real UGGs, then buy only from legitimate sources. Even if you are careful though, knock off UGGs are everywhere and you might end up buying a pair of bad UGGs even if you don’t mean to. Check both your online and offline store if they are legitimate retailers. Be especially careful when you buy from online auctions. This is where many fakes get sold.

Types of Kissing – Pucker Up For Some Phenomenal Fun!

Are you a boring kisser? For most men, the answer is a resounding YES. If you desire to learn a few creative types of kissing, this is the place for you. Hurry up! Class is about to start!

Types of Kissing

1. Stop and Kiss…

When you are walking down the street with your girl, grab her hand and abruptly stop. Pull her into you and start into her eyes for a couple of seconds. She WILL be surprised. But don’t worry about it!

Kiss her gently while running your hands down the back of her arms.

You’d be surprised how fast this kiss can knock a woman (including myself) of their feet!

2. Ice Kisses…

This one is pretty cool in BOTH senses of the word. Eat something cold, like a Popsicle and after you finish it, plant a big French kiss on her.

She will get some chills running up her back because of how cold your lips and tongue are. Just remember to do this IMMEDIATELY when your mouth is the coldest. You’d be surprised at how fast your lips warm up!

3. Spin Kiss…

This is more of a fun kiss. Spontaneously pick her up and wrap her legs around you. Now spin around as fast as you can. When the two of you are dizziest, give her a sexy kiss.

There are two things you need to watch out for. Make sure both of you DO NOT get motion sickness. Or you could find yourself in a gross situation.

Secondly, don’t drop her! I don’t think I need to tell you this, but it WILL wreck the mood.

These will definitely spice up your kissing.

Knock Sensor Failure: Now What?

Bella Miller skillfully navigated her BMW 735i onto the expressway, dodging a semi that was quickly barreling down on her. Darting over to the left lane she eased up on the accelerator just enough to give herself a little bit of extra room between her car and the Blazer she was now following. Traffic was fairly heavy at this hour of the afternoon, but one kilometer down the road Bella would be able to take the left fork and follow the outer beltway for seven kilometers. Within moments she would be out of rush hour traffic and on her way home.

With the fork fast approaching, Bella turned on her left turn signal and eased her car off of the expressway and onto the ramp leading to the outer beltway. Seeing that traffic was now light, she pressed on the accelerator and immediately felt a bit of hesitation followed by two loud knocks. Perplexed, Bella eased up on the accelerator and moved over to the right hand lane, reduced her speed, before pressing down on the accelerator again. This time, her BMW responded but she could still feel some sense of hesitancy, so she decided to lower her speed the rest of the way home.

Upon entering her driveway, Bella stopped her car and turned off the ignition. Immediately, the engine began to shudder, knock, ping, and shudder again, before making a noise that sounded almost like a sigh, followed by silence. Promptly, Bella grabbed her purse and cell phone and exited the car and ran into her house thinking that it might explode.

What Bella was experiencing was an engine that was in distress. Her BMW’s knock sensor, designed to permit her V8 to run efficiently on lower grade 87 octane gasoline, had failed. This, in turn, was causing her engine to vibrate as the lower grade fuel was not enough power for her car.

Before 1990, many cars did not come equipped with knock sensors. Thus, in order to prevent vibrating, high octane gas would always be a necessity in order for a car to run knock free. Eventually, knock sensors were created that allowed cars — including Bella’s 735i — to run on cheaper, low grade gasoline. In addition, the knock sensor had the all important benefit of stopping engine shudder which can ultimately damage a vehicle.

If you are experiencing engine vibration of any type, it could be that your knock sensor has failed. Don’t delay; have your car checked immediately to prevent possible damage. A knock sensor is a fairly cheap to replace part compared to an engine repair which can cost you thousands of dollars.

Low-Maintenance Rose Varieties – Changing The Culture Of Rose Gardening

New, low-maintenance rose varieties are introducing rose gardening to new demographic groups, and redefining the schema of the traditional rosarian. After the Rose Knock OutTM was chosen as an All- America Rose Selection (AARS) in 2000, it sold better in the following years than any rose ever before. The disease resistance and hardiness of this plant made it accessible to even the most novice gardeners. Commercial landscapers who normally avoided roses because of the hassle began using them everywhere. This was the start of a different way of thinking about roses.

Change is Good

The breeder who developed the Rose Knock Out , William Radler, was interested in roses from a very young age, and this shaped his entire career. He recognized something fundamentally wrong with the rose industry and set out to correct it. His goal was to “breed the maintenance out of roses.”

Traditionally, old garden varieties and Hybrid Teas dominated the rose market. These varieties were delicate and bred specifically for their beauty. Their diseases, pests, and climate limitations were the burden of the individual gardener– a burden born with great pride, because very few people were willing to make the sacrifice. To have a yard full of roses spoke loudly, touting the reputation of the rosarian. Many people who grew roses grew little else. That is starting to change.

A few die-hard old-fashioned rose gardeners may believe that the experience is cheapened, and they may fear that the doors of an exclusive club have been opened to the whole neighborhood. However, most will welcome the new varieties with a sigh of relief, and will delight in seeing their ranks swell as more and more gardeners successfully incorporate roses into their repertoire.

A Good Idea Goes a Long Way

William Radler developed the first Knock Out in 1989, and it hit the mainstream market in 2000, causing sweeping changes. The Knock Out roses have been unbelievably popular, and Radler hasn’t stopped breeding, with the goal of a maintenance-free rose still in mind. There have been the Pink Knock Out , the Double Knock Out , Ramblin’ Red , Carefree Sunshine , and the Rainbow Knock Out . This year, the Rainbow Knock Out picked up another AARS award for the Knock Out line. The Rainbow is the most floriferous, most disease resistant, and has the longest growing season of any Knock Out so far. They just keep getting better.

The buying public has responded positively to low-maintenance roses. And the popularity of these new roses has changed a lot about the way that roses are marketed and the way they are bred. In the eighties, you would get a full paragraph about the color and maybe another about its fragrance. Now, when you read about roses in a catalog, all of them are “easy to grow”, “sturdy”, and “exceptionally disease resistant.” It’s not just the retailers; the breeders have also shifted their focus. There is a new rose culture, a new generation of breeders out to grow the strongest roses, and our gardens and our backs will reap the benefits.

Soccer Drills – Why Coaches Should Never Use Knockout Drills in Practice

Coaches that use knockout drill during their training sessions run a great risk of destroying the confidence of the weaker players on their team, and creating disharmony within the team. Knockout drills are drills where players get progressively eliminated until you are left with a winner. Your winner will most likely be the best player on your team. My experience with coaching children is that the great majority of coaches already know who the best player on the team is. So my question is do you want to find out what you already know, or do you want to improve the ability of the players in your team? If your answer is the latter, then you have no reason to use knockout drills.

My aim with any practice is to maximise the number of touches on the soccer players that all players achieve. All soccer drills should be engineered so as to achieve this goal. Without argument, there are many valuable skills that a player must learn which do not involve touching the ball, however of the major skills (trapping, passing and tackling) all require the player to be able to control the ball in an effective manner. So for this reason, I have always tried to create sessions which get players touching the ball more. If you have a weaker player on your team and you want them to improve, get them kicking the ball more. Encouraging them to kick a ball outside of practice sessions will also speed their improvement.

Another effective way to achieve the goal of increasing touches on the ball for all players is to divide your team into small groups at practice. This may mean that you have to enlist the aid of your team manager or parents to help with supervision. Having players stand in line to wait for their turn to kick the ball is not an effective means of practice. Yet it is one seen on many training paddocks. It is definitely more challenging to supervise a number of small groups, particularly if you do not have any help, but a coach can rotate amongst the groups to aid supervision. Dividing your team into groups of 3 or 4 players, rather than 1 group of 12 to 14 players will potentially increase the number of ball touches for each players by at least three times. How much more quickly will your players improve by this method?

If you want to introduce an element of competition into your practices and you have been using knockout drills for a long time this may be a little difficult to come to terms with. All players respond better to competition (except the ones on the sideline!!). Another means of getting around this problem is to use a rotation of players. Maybe you have three team of four playing four vs. four. If you want an extra element of competition have one team sit out, replacing the team that does not win, and so on. Or if you have three teams of four set up two fields and rotate the teams around the fields.

So for those coaches that have been using knockout drills in their practice I hope you have been very successful with these. I would also hope that you may experiment with using some of these techniques, and that you continue to see improvement in your players. For new coaches I would strongly encourage you not to use knockout drills, but rather to use small groups, soccer drills that maximise the number of ball touches for all children (not just the stronger ones), and rotation of small teams. Good luck with your coaching.

Marketing is a Contact Sport, Can You Deliver a Knockout Punch?

Your best clients have lots of things to do every day, and lots of things that need their attention, and none of those things necessarily involve you. It can feel as though you’re invisible and your best prospects are walking around, over, or right through you without even noticing YOU. The way you market you and your business is how you change that.

When your marketing is doing its job it’s a full contact sport. Your marketing communications have to reach out and interrupt your potential client’s thoughts, patterns, and actions. It has to do more than politely stop them and say, “Excuse me.”

Your marketing needs to bowl them over. Not in the physical sense, but in the sense that you’re message is speaking to exactly what they’re thinking. It’s as though you know exactly what’s going through their mind. It should feel like you’ve struck up a conversation as though you were invited.

Marketing that delivers a knockout punch doesn’t do it by being obnoxious or dishonest. You deliver a marketing punch by being dead on accurate in your understanding of what your best prospects need and want. When they receive your message they should literally think, “I think that’s exactly what I’ve been looking for.”

To make that thought happen you want to focus on three key elements: self-interest, relevancy, and curiosity. When you get it right rather than giving you a “that’s nice” response they’ll be asking, “How can I find out more about this?” It happens because you’ve engaged them, and interrupted their daily existence long enough for them to pay attention to you.

That won’t happen unless your message speaks to their self-interest. It must address what’s on their mind now or what they’re talking about. And it has to make them want to know more.

Wanting to know more is the only thing that will create the motivation to act. Effective marketing is all about generating actions. You can measure actions. You can offer actions that move them closer to becoming a client. Sales won’t happen, and your marketing isn’t effective unless you produce actions.

How Hillary Can Knock Out Obama

Now is the time for Hilary Clinton to take a bold position that in one brilliant, courageous stroke shows the nation that she is more willing to pursue true reforms of the two-party plutocratic political system than Obama is.

With this position she can reveal that all the Obama talk about change is just a clever campaign strategy to seduce people who rightfully are fed up with politics as usual.

With this single position she can transform herself from status-quo-political-establishment-candidate to a true believer in what the Founders gave us in the Constitution: the right to turn public mistrust and lack of confidence in the federal government into peaceful constitutional problem solving. When 81 percent of Americans think the country is on the wrong track, then the constitutional path to reform should be used.

How can a true political leader do better than advocating use of what is sitting right there in our beloved Constitution?

How can a candidate advocating solutions for America do better than supporting what has already been used hundreds of times by the states, but has been blocked by fearful political forces for over 200 years at the federal level?

How could Obama tell the nation that he does not believe in using what the Constitution says we have a clear right to use? How could this self-professed change agent say he is against using the peaceful constitutional path to examining profound political reforms? Neither Obama nor McCain would find it easy to say that what the Founders gave us in our Constitution should not be used. Indeed, as Senators, would they introduce a bill to amend the Constitution to remove this option? I think not.

Sometimes, a great notion just needs to be articulated for people to see the clear way forward. Now is the ideal time for Hillary Clinton to say to Americans that she agrees that the political system must be fixed and that the time has arrived for a serious national discussion of political reforms that only can be achieved through constitutional amendments, because Congress has shown no inclination for pursuing deep, systemic political reforms.

The constitutional alternative is to use what is in Article V: a convention of state delegates that is given the constitutional power that so far only Congress has used, to debate and consider proposals for constitutional amendments. The Framers brilliantly created both this option and the safety net that proposed amendments, like those from Congress, must be ratified by three-quarters of the states. Nor can a totally new Constitution be considered, only amendments to the present one.

Clinton would have history and facts on her side. The clarity of the Article V convention option in the Constitution is undisputed. Better yet, the one and only stated requirement for Congress to obey for convening the convention has already been satisfied – namely that two-thirds of state legislatures ask Congress for a convention. Indeed, there have been over 500 such state requests from all 50 states. Hillary could state very simply that the time is long overdue for Congress to obey the Constitution and convene a convention. She could introduce a bill that says exactly that to show that she is really true to her words.

There have been several important books from respected academics that provide the intellectual ammunition for taking this bold position. These include: “A More Perfect Constitution” by Larry Sabato; “The Second Constitutional Convention: How The American People Can Take Back Their Government” by Richard Labunski; and “Our Undemocratic Constitution: Where the Constitution Goes Wrong (And How We the People Can Correct It)” by Sanford Levinson.

In other words, advocating the nation’s first use of an Article V convention is no far-out, brainless idea. Indeed, it is exactly what the nation needs at this time and exactly what any political leader that claims both to love our Constitution and see the need for political reforms should support.

Clinton can give many examples of what a convention could consider proposing, including amendments that: make universal health insurance coverage a constitutional right; replace the Electoral College with the popular vote for president and vice-president; take all private money out of political campaigns and replaces it with total public campaign financing; clarify that only Congress can declare war and must do so explicitly.

Be brave Hillary. Do what is both right and politically dazzling.
